I love Autumn's cooler temps and changing colors. Reds, oranges, greens, well, they are my favorite colors all year round, but they seem to shine most in Autumn. This bouquet and boutonniere represent the colors and textures I most associate with my favorite season of the year. I love the mix of traditional butterscotch roses, bright red anemones and ranunculas, brown cymbidium orchids, orange poppies and fancy gerbera daisies... such an eclectic mix with so much character. I wish I could have this bouquet sitting on my coffee table all season long.

Thanks to your comments, this installment in my new Tea Time column is a little how-to on brewing a cup of tea. Although I must admit I'm a little hesitant to share this right now. It's how I've brewed tea my entire life, but this coming weekend I'll be attending the International Tea Festival here in Los Angeles, and I'm a little worried that I'm going to have my mind blown. I'm actually taking a Tea Sommelier master class with Devan Shah and James Norwood Platt, and since I've never actually studied the art of tea before, I have to wonder if I've been doing it all wrong? I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. For now, here's how I do it:

First, I gather all of my accoutrements. I use a tea strainer like this one from the English Tea Store, and a teaspoon from this measuring spoon set from Williams Sonoma. If I decide to brew a bag of tea instead of loose tea, I make sure to have this tea bag squeezer from the English Tea Store on hand. I really do prefer loose tea, since I like my tea strong and American tea bags usually have to be doubled-up to get the strength I crave. But sometimes I use tea bags from Harney and Sons, as their silken bags hold nearly double the amount of tea as the grocery-store variety.

I also use this electric kettle with temperature controls, which has radically changed my tea-drinking experience. Not only does it heat up in minutes, the temperature controls really do make a difference for brewing different types of tea. I used to hate green tea, until I learned that I was using too-hot water and letting the leaves brew for too long. Always pay close attention to brewing times to avoid mussing with the flavors or releasing bitterness into your cup.

When making a single cup of black tea, I set my strainer on top of my tea cup and measure out 1 teaspoon of loose tea (in this case, English Breakfast, probably my very favorite!). This particular tea cup holds about 6 ounces, so the teaspoon will be enough for me, but if I'm using a larger cup, I adjust the amount of tea to keep it strong enough. When my water has reached 180 degrees, I slowly pour it over the tea, until the water level just covers the loose tea leaves. I let the tea steep for approximately 3 minutes, sometimes a little less time and sometimes a little more. I find that 5 minutes, which is usually recommended, is much too long and results in a bitter cup of tea. Even though I drink black tea the British way, with a little milk and sugar, the goal is to have a cup of tea that is delightfully palatable even plain.

And, well, that is that. If I discover something new in my class tomorrow, I'll be sure and let you know at a later date! Next week, I'll tell you about a yummy lavender tea I discovered... you know how I love lavender!

My girlfriends and I watched Sex and the City together religiously during our college days, so it seemed quite appropriate to eat at Cafeteria during a recent "reunion" weekend together in New York City. The restaurant figured into many episodes of Sex and the City as it was a regular location for Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte's gossipy brunches. The food was just as good as we imagined it would be: true comfort food with an upscale twist. We shared a number of delicious brunch items and finished our meal off with a decadent dessert in the form of deep fried oreos. The light, bright, modern ambiance of the restaurant paired with the unusual drinks and delicious bites made this spot an instant favorite!

Welcome to my new column, Tea Time! I am so excited about this!!! I love tea. As a young girl, my mother drank herbal teas at least once a day, and I was often asked to put the kettle on and bring a cup of chamomile or wild berry zinger to her while she worked in her art studio. I enjoyed tea back then, but it wasn't until I arrived in England to study in my late teens, that my true love affair with tea was born. My extended stays in London and Stratford-Upon-Avon immersed me in a land where people stopped what they were doing in the middle of the afternoon and DRANK TEA. I have delightful and delicious memories of tea at hotels, tea at tea rooms, tea at the National Gallery, tea at the Orangery at Kensington Palace... there was always tea, every single day, and after two summers of that, I was hooked.

I love drinking tea: but I also love the ceremony of tea time. I love drinking from a pretty teacup. I love the act of heating the water, pouring it over the tea leaves, stirring in milk and sugar. I especially love taking time to relax, sip, let the world around me go on hold for a few minutes... Tea time can be a very private and soothing ritual, but it can also be a beautiful social activity. My close friends would tell you that I almost always offer a cup of tea when they drop by my house.

In this column, I'll share pictures and info about my favorite teas, and perhaps some nibbles to accompany. In this particular case, I enjoyed a smooth black tea with a hint of coconut flavor (subtle, not overpowering) from The Spice Station here in Silver Lake. I've been on a coconut kick lately, and this tea has been feeding my craving. The banana bread with coconut was purchased at Gingersnap Bakery, right down the street from me. It was such a perfect accompaniment, with the coconut again being a subtle added flavor. I don't think I would normally pair a tea with a treat that had the same flavor, but in this case it really worked. Yum, yum!

Do you know how to brew a good cup of tea? Do you drink tea regularly? Do you want to know what temperature your hot water should be or where to get the best tea accoutrements? Let me know if I should share more about the process of preparing tea, or if you'd rather I just stick to favorite teas!

beauty everywhere

October 3, 2012

My grandfather used to quote Confucius constantly, what a wise man he was... Confucius, and Grandpa. Truly, we are surrounded by beauty. We just have to recognize it. I am so grateful to have been raised and nurtured by a family that looks for and acknowledges the beauty all around us. Life is beautiful.

walnut coffee cake

September 28, 2012

This has got to be the easiest + yummiest coffee cake ever. In fact, I may just have to whip up a batch this weekend! I keep a package of walnuts in my freezer so I can make this coffee cake at a moment's notice if we decide to be spontaneous and invite a friend or neighbor to drop by for brunch (clearly our favorite meal!).

1-1/2 cups flour, whole wheat and/or unbleached white 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup milk 2 unbeaten eggs

Sift flower with baking powder and salt, and blend in sugar. Add butter and milk and beat 300 strokes. Add eggs and beat two minutes.

Topping: 2 Tablespoons melted butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup walnuts, cut up 1 Tablespoon flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Combine butter and sugar and add walnuts, flour and cinnamon. Mix well.

Spread half of batter on bottom of 9" square greased pan and cover with half of topping mixture, then repeat.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serves 4-6.
