Erin and Andy had been together for many years and have an adorable toddler together, so they had a clearly developed sense of style and it was pretty easy to figure out what they liked and didn't like. They are art buffs and long-standing members of Bowers Museum, so hosting their nuptials there was a natural fit. During my walk-through at the venue, I was really taken with the natural southern-California landscaping and decided to implement some of the indigenous plants that were part of the museum's grounds - olive branches, succulents, etc. Since the museum is very stark and creates a black and white backdrop for the art installations, we decided to run with that and used linens and rental furniture in black and white too, which of course set the stage for all the brightly colored florals that Erin loved so much! The floral pieces were created with color and floral-blocking to add a modern feel despite the free-flowing style of the arrangements. Black velvet and satin ribbons added a touch of luxury while clear glass vases and black wooden boxes kept things modern and grounded. Mini planted succulents served as guest favors as well as the base for the escort cards. A trio of square moss-covered wreaths with succulent accents hung on the glass wall as a backdrop for the dessert display. I loved working with more modern elements while still being true to my natural, wild and heavily textured aesthetic. It was such a pleasure designing with Erin and her planners on this lovely event and I know that she and Andy are continuing to enjoy life together with their son!

It's always sad when you come to the end of a project, and this is the last of the "seasonal bouquets" that I created over a year ago. For this "winter" themed bouquet, I imagined what I might do if I were re-designing my own bridal bouquet. I was married on Christmas Eve, and my colors were green, white and brown, but my bouquet didn't have the sort of texture that I am so obsessed with these days. In fact, I don't think the green eye garden rose was even around when I got married! I did have cedar in my bouquet, and seeded eucalyptus, but the lisianthus, dianthus, and fern fronds are new additions. Are there any other winter brides out there? Would you carry this bouquet?

Erin and Brad are Chicago natives who decided to wed in the Vail Valley, one of their favorite vacation destinations. They were high school sweethearts and have been together for over ten years, so they had a well-defined personal "couple" style, and it was such fun to translate their style into a wedding that was distinctly them. From the birch archway I constructed and decorated as a backdrop as they said their vows, to the carpet of delicate petals on their aisle way, to the whimsical bouquets and boutonnieres, to the highly textural tablescapes, no two alike, this wedding was infused with mountain-elegance from beginning to end. Working with Erin and Brad and Erin's parents along the way was easy and enjoyable, despite the distance separating us, because truly, these are some of the kindest people I've ever met. Wishing great joy and many more decades of love and togetherness for Erin and Brad!

I love Autumn's cooler temps and changing colors. Reds, oranges, greens, well, they are my favorite colors all year round, but they seem to shine most in Autumn. This bouquet and boutonniere represent the colors and textures I most associate with my favorite season of the year. I love the mix of traditional butterscotch roses, bright red anemones and ranunculas, brown cymbidium orchids, orange poppies and fancy gerbera daisies... such an eclectic mix with so much character. I wish I could have this bouquet sitting on my coffee table all season long.

When I first sat down with Amanda and Trevor to discuss their vision for their wedding, I was thrilled to hear words like "Distressed Victoriana," "high fashion," "fantasy," "eclectic," "grunge" and "haunted." They described the crumbling estate home of Miss Havisham from Dickin's classic novel Great Expectations as their primary inspiration, and I was sold! I designed charmingly "overgrown" florals, added trailing greenery to chairs, tables, and the tent structure, brought in massive amounts of ferns, olive trees and other plants, added skeleton leaves to all the arrangements, wrapped the bouquets and boutonnieres in a luxurious French velvet, and draped the lounge furniture in cheesecloth "covers." The event ended up being a little bit Miss Havisham, a little bit steampunk, a little bit high society, and a whole lot Amanda and Trevor!

Bouquet by Season | Spring

May 16, 2012
LaurylLane-BouquetSpring-02

LaurylLane-BouquetSpring-04

I recently designed four bouquets, each representative of a different season. As spring is now upon us in my part of the world, I thought it would be appropriate to share the bouquet that stands for spring! I used some quintessentially "springy" flowers, along with succulents, which are heavily indicative of spring to me. In Southern California, succulents begin to show their offspring in the spring- a single succulent can "birth" nearly a dozen little babies! I love seeing the little succulent babies growing, and when they are big enough, detaching them and moving them to their own little plots of land where they can mature and then reproduce themselves!

Although spring here in Denver is not what I am used to, and it brings with it weird fuzz in the air that makes me sneeze, moody weather changes, and more bugs than I've ever seen in my life... there is still promise in the air- promise of grass greening, flowers blooming, sunnier skies and warmer days ahead. After the seemingly endless days of winter, this promise of new life, this burst of color, cannot help but bring a smile to my face. And hopefully, to your face as well!
