Gazpacho

July 31, 2013

Is there anything more refreshing at the close of a hot summer day than a big bowl of chilled gazpacho? I think not. I have vivid memories of playing at the lake in my grandparent's backyard ALL DAY LONG as a child, and then running up to the patio in my bathing suit, sunburnt and blissfully happy, for a cold bowl of gazpacho. It was always made with the most incredible fresh produce that my mum and grandmother had purchased at a roadside stand outside of Cleveland. Now I find that sun-ripened Californian produce is even better than the produce I remember eating as a child. Next time you're at the farmer's market, why not pick up some of summer's most delicious bounty and turn it into a batch of yummy veggie soup?

GAZPACHO

Rub the raw edge of a cut clove of garlic on the interior of a glass bowl to release the oils. Add the following vegetables:

6 or more large ripe tomatoes, skinned and crushed 2 cucumbers, peeled, seeded and finely chopped kernels from 2 cobs of corn 1 cup each minced red, yellow and green bell pepper, corn, onion, celery (and 1/2 cup or more of any other seasonal vegetables)

Pour over the veggies: 2 cups fresh tomato juice, 1/3 cup olive oil, and 3 tablespoons lemon juice. Season to taste with tabasco, worcestershire and horseradish sauces, salt and pepper. Chill thoroughly and serve with garnish of chopped parsley, chives or scallions, or avocado slices.

Succulent Wreath

This was my very first succulent wreath. I wasn't quite sure what I was doing at the time, but I wanted succulents on my door, stat. I've learned a lot since then about how to insert the succulents properly so they can grow and thrive. They are such amazing little plants and I don't think I'll ever be tired of them.

I'm actually considering teaching a class where you can learn to make your own succulent wreath! Would you come? I can promise lots of fun!

I've never considered myself an "iced tea drinker," but that is changing. I guess I always equated iced tea with that nasty stuff they serve at restaurants-- it tastes like Lipton and has been so over-brewed that the flavor is more bitter and bedraggled than anything else. Or I would think of iced tea being that "sweet tea" they serve in the South-- so cloyingly sweet that my majorly sweet "sweet tooth" just wants to gag. But all that has changed. Sometimes someone has to put something new in front of us to try, and that is exactly what happened for me. I received a package on my birthday from my husband's aunt. She's a kindred spirit-- she used to live in France and we have many common interests. She also happens to be superb at choosing gifts. One of my favorite gifts I ever received was from her - a silver cuff bracelet with a Jane Austen quote etched onto it: "Teach us... that we may feel the importance of every day, of every hour, as it passes." Anyway, this year she sent me a box full of teas from The Republic of Tea. I'll be sharing about each of these teas, but since it's 80 degrees out today and I don't have central air conditioning, a post about my new favorite iced tea seems appropriate.

This is the Watermelon Mint tea and honestly, it's like all the best things about summer all summed up in a single sip. You FEEL the sun beating down on you, but a cool breeze tickles the back of your neck, you taste that wonderful flavor of watermelon and know that there is no place you'd rather be than right where you are, right now, in this moment. The mint adds a refereshing aftertaste and suddenly you feel 10 degrees cooler than you did a moment ago. Really. It's like magic. If this is iced tea, I'm sold!

Thank you, Aunt Glenda!

I've never been big into lipstick. I don't like how it feels and I hate having to wonder if it's wearing off or smudging or caking or doing anything else weird. So I usually stick to tinted chap-sticks or glosses and focus the va-va-voom on my eyes. But with all the brightly-hued shades making a comeback this year, I told my friend Stefani (makeup artist extraordinaire) that I really wanted to find a bold peachy-coral shade that wouldn't "kiss off." She pointed me in the direction of Revlon's Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain collection, and it was a match made in heaven! These colors are saturated and vibrant, and they stay on ALL DAY LONG. I never have to worry about keeping a compact on hand, and my husband doesn't refuse to kiss me because true to it's name, it's totally "kissable." My current favorite shades are Lovesick (hot pink) and Rendezvous (peach/coral), but I'm also enjoying Smitten (berry), Romantic (red), Adore (wine/burgundy) and Charm (light peach). This product is fabulous, and so reasonably priced. It's in the $12-$15 range and available at your local drug store!

Ranunculus definitely have to be my favorite flowers ever. I know I've said that about roses and orchids and a lot of other flowers... they are all so dear to me. But ranuncs, as I lovingly refer to them, are especially special. Most especially special.

Peony Perfection

The peony season is lasting longer than usual due to the stunningly moderate weather we've been experiencing lately, and you'll hear no complaints from me. Peonies never cease to amaze me. It's incredible that they go from being weird, tightly closed balls and then they open and expand into these fluffy, scrumptious, petaled bits of amazingness. I just wish they were available ALL YEAR ROUND.

Spring, spring, spring. Could there possibly be a better time of year for flowers? I think not. I am so enamored by the beautiful blooms all over my city right now and it's impossible not to fill my home with these pretties. Hydrangea, roses, lavender and gardenias are the current blooms in my garden and I love to be surrounded by bouquets of flowers inside and then look out the window and see even more flowers in bloom! Is it spring in your part of the world? What are you growing in your garden?

Spring lilac is in bloom and we can't get enough of it! I've been thinking of planting a lilac bush in the garden, but I'm not sure that I know how to care for it- I feel like lilac plants can be a bit persnickety. Do you grow lilacs? Have any lilac-care secrets to share???

I have been ridiculously busy lately and have sadly been neglecting this blog, but I'm trying to get back into the groove. Two things: first, I am thrilled to announce that I've brought on my very first intern! Kathy is joining me for the next few months and I am so excited to have her on the team! Second, it's peony season!!! I know you're just as excited as I am, or you wouldn't be reading this blog. Peonies are stunning confections of frothy petal gorgeousness. I can't get enough!

Fresh Floral Bracelet

Floral bracelets are such fun accessories for your spring wardrobe! They take some precision and some patience to put together, but they're really quite simple to make. Most fresh cut flowers won't last long out of water, especially not soft flowers like these white ranunculus, but if you use floral glue to adhere them to an existing bracelet or piece of ribbon shortly before you head "out on the town," they'll probably look good until it won't matter any longer (ie., the flowers get crushed as you flop around wildly on the dance floor!).
